
Barcelos
Barcelos is a medieval city, located in a place with prehistoric archaeological remains, but it was in the 16th century that Barcelos was built. XII that D. Afonso Henriques granted it a charter and made it a town.
In 1385, Constable Nuno Álvares Pereira became the 7th Count of Barcelos and would hand over the town as a dowry in the marriage of his daughter D. Beatriz to D. Afonso.
A unique and peculiar place, bathed by the Cávado River and shaped by centuries of history and traditions. When walking through the historic center you are following the same path taken by pilgrims heading to Compostela. The entire city center is guided by monuments of architectural details from various eras, from Romanesque, Gothic, through Renaissance, Baroque style to Neoclassical.
It is important to talk about the legendary Rooster of Barcelos, which tells the epic story of a pilgrim on his way to Santiago de Compostela, who was miraculously saved from the gallows, thanks to Santiago, when the crowing of a rooster was surprisingly heard.
Also the traditional and contemporary gastronomy that is based on local products, reflected in delicacies such as cod, lamprey, rojões, the unmistakable and unique papas de sarrabulho à moda de Barcelos, arroz pica no chão, cozido and, of course , the Barcelos-style roast rooster.
